BHUBANESWAR: Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan inaugurated the city’s LKM center and library on Friday. It was set up by the LK Mahapatra Memorial Trust in memory of the eminent anthropologist, Professor LK Mahapatra at his residence, 16 Satyanagar.
The Union Minister, an anthropology student taught by Prof. Mahapatra, spoke about the vision and pioneering research carried out by Prof. Mahapatra, such as the emphasis on multidisciplinarity he pioneered at the University. of Utkal 40 years ago, which was adopted in the new National Education Policy.
Pradhan also talked about Professor Mahapatra’s research on Southeast Asia, which the Indian government has also decided to focus on. He expressed confidence that in the days to come, the LKM Center and Library will continue Professor Mahapatra’s legacy and conduct groundbreaking social science research. He provided full support to the center and offered to link it with other research institutions such as the Indian Council for Social Science Research.
Professor Mahapatra was one of India’s most eminent anthropologists who pioneered research on the anthropology of development and development-induced displacement. The library houses, among its most prized collections, all of Professor Mahapatra’s writings (books and research papers) as well as his field notes which provide insight into the work of a master ethnographer.
It also houses his personal library comprising classics of anthropology and social science from the 1950s, many of which are rare and out of print books.Prof KC Tripathy, Prof KK Basa, Vice Chancellor of Maharaja Sriram University Chandra Bhanja Deo , Prof AB Ota, Director, SCSTRTI; and Professor Mahapatra’s son Sujit and daughter Sheela were present.
