Amanda Carney’s “Quick Awakening”

WHEELING – October ushers in three new shows and a new look at the traditional opening reception at Artworks Around Town.

In the Studio Gallery, Amanda Carney and Andrew Bartsch will present their work while the Student Gallery will present the creations of participants from Wheeling’s NAMI organization.

The Hop Gallery takes on a new form and a new day, with a free reception from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 2. Light refreshments will be served and everyone is welcome to stop and meet the artists.

Amanda Carney holds an interdisciplinary degree from West Liberty University and owns and operates The Cats Paw Art Studio, LLC. His whole life was devoted to study and living art. She has never worked off the pitch.

“My work is myself,” she said, describing her designs as “bright, colorful and joyful in their presentation but also sad, morbid and irreverent in their subjects”.

Most of the works in this exhibition are portraits of caricatured female figures existing in a state of surreal emotion or without emotion. Carney works primarily with left-hand paint but uses other mediums such as watercolor pencil and ink. Recently, she returned to creating digital art that she loved when she was younger.

Sharing the Studio gallery is Andy Bartsch. He describes himself as “an illustrator specializing in comic book style”. Her work has never been in a gallery before and Artworks is happy to give her this opportunity. Bartsch’s inspiration comes from classic hero and super villain comics, graphic novels, science fiction as well as “the hardships and nonsense of modern life”. He accepts committee work.

The student part of the north end will host the works of NAMI clients. Patti Neic is coordinator. The organization offers help and support to any adult living with a mental health problem or showing signs and symptoms of a mental illness.

Artworks Around Town is a non-profit charitable and educational art gallery and center. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. Monday to Saturday, except Friday when it closes at 6 p.m.
