Kershaw County helps distribute books in the community

The Kershaw County Library has launched its summer bookmobile session for children, teens and adults.

KERSHAW COUNTY, South Carolina — Kershaw County Library promotes summer reading.

They do this by using their library on wheels, their bookmobile, to help provide books to people living in apartments and communities, churches and parks in areas they call “Book Deserts”.

Amy Schofield of the Kershaw County Library says the book wasteland is, “where there’s a shortage of printed materials of books, of course being librarians we’re behind in reading, having books available in these places in these deserts of books is hugely important.”

Schofield says the bookmobile focuses on students.

“We try to get books into the hands of kids who may not have them at home,” she says and adds that the books are not just for kids and teens, but for adults too. .

Bookmobile beacons with food for the soul and United Way of Kershaw County who helped them identify where the book deserts are.

“Going to a library creates an extra step, an extra barrier, you have to have transportation and then they don’t have to worry about bringing it back, they’re theirs too, there’s no fines , there’s no replacement fee, so we’re trying to make it as accessible as possible,” Schofield said.
