CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) — History is the foundation of Austin Lassiter’s honors and AP courses at the Charleston Charter School of Math and Science.
Lassiter has been teaching high school for 4 years and says he caught the story bug after college. He says he hopes to pass on the same love to all of the students he teaches.
“The best part of teaching the class is seeing them really embrace learning and reading and it’s not just for the curriculum or that for a lot of them it’s the tough first college class. that they followed,” says Lassiter.
To supplement what he teaches and help his students better understand our country’s past, Lassiter likes to add extra books to his classes, from President Abraham Lincoln’s famous Gettysburg Address to books about the Civil Rights era.
For his Donors Choose project, Lassiter hopes to give his students a personal copy of the books they learn and read.
He says giving his 17 students a personal book to keep gives more value to the lesson and allows his students to focus on areas of the subject that stand out to them.
But he says books have a price.
“The books are not cheap and they cost between $10 and $40 each. Some are college or university level texts that I used when I was in school. That they can build their own libraries really means a lot to me, and it gives them the opportunity to annotate it, highlight it, and tag it. It’s up to them to keep it so they can make it their own,” Lassiter said.
Lassiter says the current book for his Donors Choose project is Pillar of Fire: America in the Royal Years 1963-1965.
He says it’s a book that will help him learn about the Civil Rights era and prepare his students for the AP College Board exam at the end of the semester.
