DFI Graphic Novel Workshop from June 18


Doha: Artists and aspiring artists are invited to participate in the Doha Film Institute’s Graphic Novel Workshop: The Art of Showing and Telling from June 18-30.

The Institute posted on its social media accounts that “the course mixes theory and practice, with time dedicated to lectures and practical sessions. Participants will have the chance to develop their own projects with the help and guidance of the mentors who run the class.

The workshop will help participants create their own graphic novel, starting from the fundamentals of storytelling. They will also learn how to compose a scene and create that scene as a cartoon.

The workshop mentors are Roda Al Thani and Dawood Al Anwari. Al Thani is a Qatari visual artist based in Doha. She graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar (VCUQ) with a BFA in Graphic Design. His work ranges from game design to publications and posters. In 2018, she obtained her MFA in Visual Narrative from the School of Visual Arts in New York. She has been featured in several exhibitions including the Ajyal Film Festival and is currently a producer at Qatar Museums.

Dawood Al Anwari graduated from VCUQ in 2013 with a BFA in Graphic Design. He worked on several film sets as an artistic director and developed a passion for teaching. Dawood has taught several courses in his field of knowledge, from stop-motion courses to 101 introductions to game design and poster design to university students.

Interested candidates aged 18 above who wish to participate are requested to email [email protected], and submit a short personal biography. Portfolio submissions are optional and the submission deadline is June 12. The workshop will take place at the Doha Film Institute, Building 25 of the Katara Cultural Village.
