On Saturday, October 1, Athol Public Library and Hero Shack Press are teaming up to host their first-ever Comic Book Fest. Athol’s City Hall and Library will be transformed into a comic book lover’s dream. With comics, artist panels, vendors, cosplay, games, crafts and more, there will be something for everyone at this family-friendly event.
What started as an idea to promote local indie comic creators quickly grew into a full-fledged festival-style event with games, vendors, crafts and community partners working to engage guests. dubbed Comic Book Fest.
“Not only has this turned into an impressive showcase of local creators, but it’s also a great opportunity to come together and celebrate the love of art and reading,” said Emily Boughton, the young Adult Library Tech at Athol Public Library. “We’re excited to share all the fun stuff we’ve been working on.”
Christopher and Diana Tamulevich, the team behind Hero Shack Press, invited and collaborated with independent comic book creators from the North Quabbin area and across New England. Many participating artists will have works to exhibit and sell during the event.
During the festival there will also be special panels, demonstrations and events. Heroes in training can follow a special obstacle course provided by the YMCA and prepare by designing their own masks, capes and accessories in the “Hero Zone”. Holeymoleys Comics & Collectibles will sell pop culture items, including mainstream comics, while Friends of Athol Public Library will sell gently used books at the library. Guests are also encouraged to show off their favorite cosplay or costume and take part in a special parade with the DressUp Dreamers. A schedule of events will be available on the library website and social media pages prior to the event. By participating in the activities and visiting the various artists, visitors will have the opportunity to win tickets that they can participate in raffles for signed prints, card games, giant pop-its, collectibles , etc.
Comic Book Fest will be held at Athol City Hall, 584 Main St., and next door at the Athol Public Library on Saturday, October 1. Visitors of all ages are welcome to stop and enjoy the festivities from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
