Five Animorphs fans create a Halloween costume that mimics one of the iconic transformations of the young adult sci-fi series book covers.
A group of Animorphs fans created the perfect costume to celebrate the books. Animorphs is an iconic young adult sci-fi series by KA Applegate originally published in 52 volumes between 1996 and 2001. The popular series has grown into a franchise, spanning derivative books, graphic novels, game play Boy Color is a two-season television series starring Shawn Ashmore which premiered in 1998. While a Animorphs The film has been in development since 2015, Applegate and her husband Michael Grant pulled out of the project in 2020, leaving its future uncertain.
An iconic element of the original Animorphs books are elaborate book covers, with photo manipulations showing the main characters transforming into animals. The series followed a group of teens with the power to transform into any creature whose DNA they acquire as they battle a race of alien slugs determined to take over every spirit. human on Earth. Each blanket depicted one of the main characters at each stage of transformation into one of the animals featured in the book. These covers included all kinds of animals, from lizards to gorillas to aliens and everything in between throughout the series.
Twitter user Milkael Milkelson released an ingenious group costume in which they and four friends dressed up as different stages of one of the series’ iconic book cover transformations. Specifically, they mimicked Rachel’s transformation into a grizzly bear on the cover of Animorphs # 7: The Stranger. Their costume was certainly a success, leading KA Applegate herself to quote tweet the image, saying “Well, this is absolutely amazing.“Check out the post below:
Rachel, to whom this costume pays homage, is one of the most iconic characters in the series, a blonde fashionista who is also a tough warrior. She is the fiery cousin of Jake, the leader of the group, and often compared to Xena: warrior princess. If the series had been released a few years later, it certainly would have drawn comparisons to the blonde and bubbly protagonist of Buffy the vampire slayer also.
Animorphs is such a hit that it still inspires Halloween costumes two decades after the last novel was published. Hopefully this fact will inspire the powers that be to iron out their differences with Applegate & co. and speed up progress on the film. So far, the future of the series has been quite similar to the central costume in the photo above: trapped in a grotesque limbo between reality and fantasy.
