While The Batman has yet to hit theaters, early estimates suggest the film will gross around $150 million at the box office in its first weekend of release. A series of trailers and clips were released in the weeks leading up to The Batmantheatrical release. A clip has fans celebrating star Robert Pattinson’s voice as the Dark Knight, with some calling it the best live bat voice to date.

The Batman was described by director Matt Reeves and Pattinson as a neo-noir crime thriller. In particular, the film follows a young Bruce Wayne who is only in his second year of vigilance and who will rely heavily on the character’s detective abilities.

“At the first meeting, [Reeves] was saying, we want to lean into ‘the biggest detective aspect of the world’ and be a noir detective movie,” Pattinson said in a recent interview. “And, you know, normally when directors say that, they do just like a mood board, and that’s just a matter of imagery. But I read the script, and it is! It’s a crime movie. It happens all the time in graphic novels, but it’s always kind of on the back burner in the movies.”

This aligns with previous comments from Reeves in 2017, who said the film would focus on Batman’s detective skills. “I think there’s a chance to do an almost noir cop version of Batman that’s driven by point of view in a very, very powerful way that will hopefully connect you to what’s going on in his head and inside his heart,” he said.

In March 2021, Reeves announced that filming on The Batman had officially ended after major production delays due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, which pushed the release date back nearly a year. While the film may now have a Blu-ray release date, it was also recently revealed that The Batman had managed to avoid an R rating in the United States, and is currently rated PG-13 for “strong violent and disturbing content, drug content, coarse language and suggestive material”.

The Batman hits theaters on March 4, 2022 and will then be available on HBO Max on April 19, 46 days after its theatrical release.
